COMM 214 Genre Studies
This course delves into the rich tapestry of genres, exploring their historical development, defining characteristics, and cultural significance across literature and popular culture. Students will engage with a variety of texts, from classic to contemporary, across fiction genres such as comedy, science fiction and fantasy, horror, and more. By examining the conventions and innovations within each genre, students will gain a deeper understanding of how genre shapes narrative, meaning, reader expectations, and industry practices. This course will also consider how genres intersect with issues of identity, power and society, fostering critical analysis and appreciation of diverse literary traditions. Fall, Spring.
