UNIV 264 Mentors-in-Residence Training
This course will provide a survey of best practices related to academic peer mentoring. Areas of focus include an overview of student helping and paraprofessional roles, the specific role of the mentor, interpersonal skills, study skills, learning theory, student development basics, mental health issues, diversity and cultural awareness, and ethical issues. Mentor candidates learn how to model effective student behaviors, foster campus connections between residence halls and the classroom, and help first-year and other students bridge the gap between their residential and academic lives. At the conclusion of the course, academic peer mentors will be hired for the fall on the basis of class performance and job availability. Letter grade will apply. It is important to note that taking this course does NOT guarantee students a Mentor-in-Residence position. Fall, Spring on demand.
