FIRE 401 Political & Legal Foundations of Fire Protection

This course examines the political and legal systems that form the foundation for fire protection in the United States. Students will explore the evolution of fire service law, governmental structure, public policy development, constitutional and administrative law, liability issues, regulatory requirements, and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Emphasis is placed on understanding how political processes, legal constraints, and intergovernmental relationships influence fire department operations, leadership decisions, personnel management, community risk reduction, and enforcement authority.
